The analysis laboratory: material characterisation before design begins

Laboratory analysis of the material gives us the real data we need to size our plants.

Every material has its own origin and characteristics — whether it comes from a quarry, demolition waste or a contaminated site. Each behaves differently when washed, so our laboratory’s work begins with material characterisation and continues at three key stages throughout the plant’s life cycle.

Design Testing & commissioning After-sales

Material characterisation

Once we receive a sample of the material to be treated, the analysis begins. At the heart of this stage is our pilot washing rig for aggregates, which reproduces on a small scale what the final plant will do, producing three results:

  1. Turbid water
The essential “raw material” for all the tests that follow.
  2. Measuring the fines content
A material estimated to contain 5% fines can turn out to contain 20%: we obtain the real figure and avoid sizing errors that would become serious problems once the plant is built.
  3. Particle size distribution (PSD)
The distribution of particle sizes: an analysis we perform in-house, saving the customer the time and cost of using an external laboratory.

Next come the flocculation tests, carried out in beakers and graduated cylinders to identify the most suitable flocculant, determine the optimal dosage and size the clarifier and dosing units. Dewatering tests then assess the thickened sludge to size and configure the filter press, including filtration pressure, filter-chamber thickness, cloth type and any required chemical conditioning, such as milk of lime.

From theory to practice

A newly commissioned plant requires fine-tuning. If, during commissioning, the material behaves differently from expected, the laboratory steps in with control tests to align actual process conditions with the assumptions made during design. This is where sizing theory meets site reality — and where we make sure the two match.

If the material changes over time

The relationship with the laboratory does not end when the water and sludge treatment plant is delivered. Months or years later, the material a customer treats may change, and with it the plant’s filtration parameters. When operating issues arise, we receive new samples, analyse how they behave and recalibrate the process.

se la matrice cambia nel tempo

We believe our customers should have the best available technology for wash water and sludge treatment. That is why we have always invested in our own research and development.

From chemical analysis to contaminant research to our partnership with the Politecnico di Milano, we invest to anticipate future treatment requirements and emerging process challenges.

The laboratory is also a key part of our research and development activities. Alongside flocculation and filtration tests, we use advanced technologies such as spectrophotometers for the chemical screening of contaminants in water, giving our engineering team better data for treatment development and process optimisation.

We are also building a new, larger laboratory within our facility, with more space for testing and plans for a pilot-scale Soil Washing plant that will allow us to reproduce the entire remediation process on a reduced scale before designing the full-scale plant.
