Function:
Storage or
chemical reaction
The turbid water tank (or sump) is the first process unit to receive the water from the washing plant, laden with suspended solids. Tecnoidea designs it to adapt to different process requirements: from a buried collection and transfer sump for aggregate treatment, through to a full agitated reaction tank for the chemical conditioning typical of environmental or industrial treatment.
From simple storage to an agitated reaction tank for chemical processes, the turbid water tank collects incoming process water and feeds the clarifier.
The tank collects the water arriving from the washing plant, which is laden with fine suspended solids. Depending on the tank geometry and installation configuration — above ground or buried — the water is extracted by abrasion-resistant pumps in vertical, submersible or horizontal configurations, which transfer the water to the upper inlet of the clarifier. The flocculant is injected directly into this delivery line.

The turbid water tank also performs another important function: it collects the filtrate returning from the filter press.

The role of this unit changes according to the application and the characteristics of the contaminants to be treated.

In plants processing natural aggregates, where no chemically contaminated material or waste is being treated, the tank acts as a collection and transfer point. A buried (or sunken) sump is generally built, so that water can be conveyed by gravity from the washing plant.
When treating contaminated soil or road-sweeping waste, the unit becomes a larger tank equipped with mixing systems. In this case, the required contact time must be provided, to allow proper mixing with specific chemical reagents such as oxidants, coagulants or antifoam agents.
When the turbid water contains light fractions, a static screen is installed.
