SEMP is an Italian engineering company active in plant engineering and major infrastructure projects in Lombardy. For the Milano Santa Giulia redevelopment, SEMP formed a joint venture (ATI) with Veolia to deliver the environmental remediation works required ahead of construction of the Olympic Arena. The project involved the treatment of contaminated soils as part of the preliminary site-remediation phase.

The project challenges

1-100

Volumes and feed variability

The project required the treatment of 1,000,000 m³ of material over three years, with highly variable feed containing organic components, slag and up to 40% fines by weight.

2-100

Compact footprint

The plant footprint had to remain below 3,000 m² to preserve sufficient space for stockpiling treated materials pending testing and conformity assessment prior to on-site reuse.

3-100

Delivery times

The plant had to be delivered within a compressed schedule linked to the handover of areas for the Olympic construction works; a supply of this scale would normally require more than 12 months.

Supply

Tecnoidea supplied a complete turnkey soil-washing plant for the treatment of contaminated soils, configured to meet the remediation requirements defined by SEMP.

Process configuration and layout

Tecnoidea configured the washing and water-treatment stages to accommodate feed variability within a 2,950 m² layout, preserving the logistics space required for on-site material handling and storage.

Twin filter presses

Two FPTA 1620×1620 filter presses with 120 plates were installed to manage the clay-rich sludge stream, producing up to 400 t/day of dewatered filter cake.

Results

Accelerated commissioning

Ordered in July 2021, the plant was commissioned in March 2022, eight months later, despite the industrial supply-chain constraints of the period.

Closed-loop water recovery

The plant treats up to 600 m³/h of wash water for reuse within the soil-washing process.

Remediation requirements

The treatment system supported SEMP in meeting the environmental parameters defined in the remediation tender, enabling treated materials to proceed to the required testing and conformity assessment for on-site reuse.
